19/05/2012 - Great Strides 65 in aid of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust

Great Strides 65 is a brand new event from the Cystic Fibrosis Trust which invites teams of 4-6 people to undertake a sponsored walk from Newlands Corner near Guildford to Shoreham by Sea along the Downs Link on Saturday 19 May 2012.

�

The route will take you to a maximum height of 133 metres with a total ascent of just over 500 metres in under 16 hours, with a support team who will meet you at checkpoints to help you to refuel and change clothes.

�

This event is being organised by the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, the UK's only national charity dedicated to all aspects of Cystic Fibrosis (CF). We fund research to treat and cure CF and aim to ensure appropriate clinical care and support for people with Cystic Fibrosis.

�

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is one of the UK's most common life-threatening inherited diseases affecting over 9,000 people in the UK.

�

Over two million people in the UK carry the faulty gene that causes Cystic Fibrosis - around 1 in 25 of the population.

�

Only half of those living with Cystic Fibrosis are likely to live past their late 30s.

Callander to Balquhidder / Killin Cycle for Cystic Fibrosis

There is a choice of two routes:

1) Callander to Balquhidder:
A nice level cycling route along Loch Lubnaig and via Strathyre with a refreshments stop involving plenty of home baking! Once you reach Balquhidder, its back to Callander by the same route. In total this is about 28 miles of cycling, but if this sounds too far, some cyclists turn around at Strathyre for a gentler 15-mile ride. With its start around 10.30am, this is a family route suitable for children and takes around 4-5 hours in total. The ride includes a visit to the church where Rob Roy McGregor is buried.

2) Callander to Killin:
For something a little more challenging you can carry on once you reach Balquhidder climbing up to Glen Ogle before heading down into Killin. This has sections along the road and, including the return journey, is about 50 miles and starts at 10am.

Pledge 2 Pedal is a family friendly cycle event, which St Luke's Hospice are running in conjunction with Harrow Council and Harrow Cyclist Group (who are part of the London Cycle Campaign). There will be a 15 and 30 mile circular route around Harrow & Brent, so whether you�re a beginner or an avid cyclist you can get involved and take part!

Registration is �15 for adults, �5 for children (under 16) and �35 for families (two adults and three children) and you are encouraged to raise as much sponsorship as you can.

St Catherine�s Hospice will be holding the 9^th annual Sussex Weald Bike Ride on Sunday 20^th May 2012. Last year we had over 350 people take part and we raised a brilliant �31,000!� This year we�re pleased to announce that we have devised some fantastic new routes which range from a fun 10 mile circuit that all the family can enjoy, through to a hilly 44 mile challenge for the more experience cyclist. All routes are on-road and fully marshalled with clear, frequent route signs.

Advanced registration is �15 per adult (or �23 if you sign up on the day) and under 18s ride for free. If you are riding in a team of six or more adults you can receive a 20% discount on entry fees, so why not encourage your friends and family to join you and raise sponsorship as a group.

We had so much fun last year that we are doing it again!

Sunday�20th May�- Kent (Mote Park, Maidstone)

To take part you just have to be up for a laugh! If you don�t mind getting soaking wet, covered in foam and generally being silly for a few hours whilst raising much needed funds for Children Today, then 'It's a Knockout' is the event for you!

We are looking for teams of 7-10 people to participate in this version of the much loved television classic. All we ask is that you pay a �50 registration�fee and raise a minimum sponsorship of �500, only �50 each!

Why not set yourself a new and exciting challenge in the spirit of this Olympic year, and raise money for an incredible cause at the same time?

Marie Curie Cancer Care is giving you the opportunity to take part in that �once in a� lifetime� event by holding a special �Charity Tandem Skydive Jump Day� on the 26^th May 2012 at Cockerham near Lancaster. Our provider, the London Parachute School, has over 25 year�s professional experience in skydive challenges so you�ll be in very safe hands!

You�ll take part in a tandem skydive with an expert instructor from a staggering 12,000 feet, so whilst skydiving is a challenge even for the bravest of us, this will ultimately be a hands-free experience for participants to really embrace the challenge and �enjoy� the thrill and exhilaration of the ride.

However, by taking this epic step outside your comfort zone for a few seconds / minutes, the monies you raise by taking part in this jump will help to fund many hours of specialist nursing care, to allow people with terminal cancer and other illnesses to be cared for in their last days within the comfort of their own homes and surrounded by their family.

So join myself, Sam James, your local event fundraiser (and equally terrified participant) on the 26^th May for the challenge of a lifetime and help provide the nursing care that makes such a difference.

Are you up for a challenge?

This exhilarating challenge will take place from the �launch site� at the top of the Clock Tower at Abberley Hall in Worcestershire where a team of experienced instructors will guide you down the 161 feet descent!�

This beautiful Clock Tower was commissioned by John Joseph Jones in 1882 and took over two years to construct. It is built on Merritt�s Hill due north of the Hall, 700 feet above sea level and nestling between Abberley and Woodbury Hill overlooking the Teme Valley with the Welsh mountains visible in the distance.�

Anyone can take part in this challenge as long as you are aged 14 or over. No experience is necessary as all training in provided on the day. To secure your place a �10 registration fee is required and we ask that you raise a minimum sponsorship of �50 per person.
